Going to Work After Microdermabrasion

Going to Work After Microdermabrasion

You may have heard about microdermabrasion in Boston, and you may have even tried it yourself before. But have you taken the time to understand the recovery time and determine whether it's okay to go to work after the non-invasive treatment?

If you want to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars, and smooth out the skin's texture, then a microdermabrasion facial may be the ideal procedure for you.

As you age, dead skin cells build up around your face causing little bumps. Microdermabrasion helps to slough off these dead skin cells removing the dirt that has built up in your pores.

Microdermabrasion can also help bring out a healthier complexion and remove excess oil from your skin to reduce the risk of future breakouts.

If you're debating whether or not to go back to work straight after a microdermabrasion session, we will walk you through the basics and provide some insights into this popular cosmetic procedure.

What to Expect After Your Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Here are some of the things that you can expect after having a microdermabrasion treatment:

  • Immediately following your treatment: Your face will feel warm and flushed as your body works hard to repair itself after the procedure. You might notice some redness and swelling around your cheeks or jawline that fades within a few hours.
  • The next day: You'll likely experience mild flaking on your forehead and around the nose area — this is normal! Ensure you don't scrub too hard when washing your face to avoid irritating any open pores.
  • Over time: The skin will appear smoother and brighter immediately following the procedure.
  • A lingering glow. You'll see a noticeable difference in your complexion for up to six months after your treatment.
  • Improved hydration and elasticity. Your skin will retain moisture better, so it will be softer and supple than before your treatment.
  • Reduced pore size. Your pores will look smaller, which means less visible blackheads and whiteheads on your nose, cheeks, and chin.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that uses a diamond-tipped wand to gently exfoliate the outer and inner layers of the skin. The procedure, which can be done in a doctor's office or medical spa, takes about 20 minutes to achieve radiant skin.

The treatment is performed by a licensed aesthetician or dermatologist and can help improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, discolorations, and dullness. Microdermabrasion uses an abrasive device containing aluminum oxide crystals to gently sand away and exfoliate the uppermost layers of skin.

Once those top layers are removed, your body naturally replaces them with new cells, resulting in more vibrant and healthier-looking skin. The new cells also provide a smoother texture to the skin's surface, making you appear more youthful.

Can You Go to Work After Your Microdermabrasion?

If you're considering a microdermabrasion procedure, you may have some concerns about the recovery period. The good news is that there is no downtime! You can go back to work right away and resume your normal activities.

However, you should avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after your microdermabrasion treatment because it may irritate the skin. The skin is a bit red after the procedure, but it shouldn't last more than 24 hours. You may notice peeling the day following your treatment, but this is normal and should be gone within 24 hours.

You may experience some mild tingling or stinging sensation during the treatment, but this will also subside.

Post-Microdermabrasion Skin Care Tips

After a microdermabrasion treatment, you'll want to take steps to ensure that the skin is protected and the results last.

Here are some post-microdermabrasion skin care tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid using products containing alcohol or other harsh chemicals, as they can damage the outer layer of your skin, making it prone to infection and inflammation.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer on your facial skin.
  • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from sun damage.
  • Avoid abrasive scrubs, toners, and astringents for at least 24 hours after your treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and prevent dehydration which can lead to damaged skin cells and may lead to dryness and irritation.
  • Don't pick at any flaking skin or scabs! Scabs are part of the healing process after microdermabrasion. Still, if you pick at them too soon or too aggressively, you'll damage healthy new skin cells underneath and cause scarring or discoloration of your complexion.
